Best Ever Drum Machine App for iPad

Armed with a beautifully designed, analogue-like interface, a whole host of useful features and plenty of authentic kit sounds, DM1 – The Drum Machine provides a lot for its relatively small price tag.

Upon loading you’re presented with a 16/32-beat step sequencer to program your drum beats, with plenty of custom options and a selection of 64 electronic drum kits, 19 classic drum kits and 45 extra electronic kits produced by Fingerlabs.

Alongside the step sequencer, there’s a pads section that replicates the feel of a real old-school drum machine, a mixer to get each part of the kit sounding just right, two effects processors and a song sequencer to bring the whole thing together. The result is a fully featured solution for creating drum sequences on your iPad.

There are few apps that can boast this many instruments, effects options and this much versatility in the same price bracket. With some useful extras such as WIST support (for syncing up with other iPads and iPhones) and MIDI connectivity via the Apple Camera Connection Kit, Fingerlabs has ensured that you don’t really need to go anywhere else.

There are few things to fault here, save for the fact that what would  really complete this complex piece of kit is a comprehensive instruction manual. That said, even if you’re an absolute beginner, you should have no problem in picking up DM1 – The Drum Machine and creating sounds straight away.

For the more experienced musicians, however, this app is perhaps even more fun. There’s a lot to experiment with here and the results range from satisfyingly authentic to truly bizarre. The only real issue you’re going to come across is being able to hit the Home button and step away from this great music-making app.
